Adults have a total of 32 teeth which includes 16 on the upper jaw and 16 on the lower jaw.  Wisdom teeth, also know as third molars, are the last teeth to erupt into each area of the mouth. Most adults however do not have enough space in their jaw to allow the wisdom tooth to erupt into a full functional bite.  When this is the case, the wisdom tooth can pose a variety of problems that include damage to the tooth in front of it with loss of bone support or sometimes cavities that can happen below the gum line.  Wisdom teeth can be especially problematic when a portion of the tooth comes into the mouth but the remainder is below the gum line.  This situation can lead to what is called pericornitis which is an infection around the impacted wisdom tooth.  Pericornits can range in severity from very minor infections to ones that cause significant facial swelling that sometimes can lead to airway compromise.  Having wisdom teeth removed while the roots are still developing can help patients avoid these potential problems and also is the safest time to remove them when the post operative risk of complications is very low.   By taking radiographs and performing an exam, Dr. Boedeker can help determine if you will have enough room for the wisdom teeth to come in fully or if they are sources of potential problems or pathology. 

Having wisdom teeth removed is one of the most common surgical procedures performed by Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons. Most patients are able to have their wisdom teeth removed in the office.  With extensive training in outpatient IV sedation and anesthesia, Dr. Boedeker can help you decide on an anesthesia plan that ensures comfort and safety.


Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is the specialty of dentistry that treats surgical problems of the face and jaws.  Oral Surgeons train for a minimum of four years after dental school in a hospital setting.  With advanced training in IV sedation and General Anesthesia, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons are able to treat patients comfortably and safely in an office environment.  Below are some of the services that are provided at Colorado Plains Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery: 
Dental implants have revolutionized dentistry and have made the replacement of missing teeth possible and predictable. Dental implants can be thought of as titanium tooth roots that are placed into the jaw where a tooth or multiple teeth have been lost. Some patients that have had extensive bone resorption after loosing a tooth may not be immediate candidates for implant placement and may require bone grafting to build up the supporting bone and provide a stable foundation for implant placement.  Implants are placed into the jaw bone and usually allowed to integrate into the bone over a period of 4-6 months. In some instances, implants are able to be utilized earlier or can even be placed at the time a tooth is extracted.  After implants have been placed and the bone has healed, they are ready to be uncovered.  After the implants are uncovered, they are ready to be restored with either a crown (for a single implant) bridge (for two or more implants) or denture (for replacement of multiple or all teeth).   Dr. Boedeker offers dental implant consultations for patients who wish to see if they are candidates for this life changing treatment.




Bone Grafting
Not all patients are immediate candidates for dental implant placement.  Either through trauma, long standing periodontal disease, atrophy, or pathology bone may be resorbed or missing to the point that it needs to be replaced or grown prior to being able to place implants.  With advances in technology, we are now able to grow bone in areas where it is needed to give a stable foundation for future implant placement.  Either by utilizing bone from cadaveric bone banks or using bone from a different part of the jaw, bone can be added to areas of the jaw to replace areas of deficiencies and be a stable platform for implant placement.  
Facial Trauma
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons play a vital role in prevention and treatment of injuries to the face and associated structures. Injuries to the face can have a dramatic effect on not only function but also facial cosmetics. With the goal of restoration of function and facial cosmesis to pretraumatic values, oral and maxillofacial surgeons are often sought to help reestablish occlusion and provide cosmetic repair to facial injuries to help minimize or hide facial scarring.
